The process to becoming a U.S. citizen is about to look a little different. USCIS has officially announced that a new version of the Naturalization Civics Test will be administered to applicants who file on or after October 20, 2025, and applicants need to prepare for a tougher standard.

Here’s what’s new in the updated test:
· You’ll now be asked 20 civics questions (up from 10).
· To pass, you’ll need to answer at least 12 correctly.
· Officers will stop the test once you’ve either passed or failed
.
· The English reading, writing, and speaking portions remain unchanged.
One important detail is how the scoring works. Interviewing officers will not run through all 20 questions in every case. If you reach 12 correct answers, the test ends and you pass. If you miss 9, the test ends there as well, and you fail. This leaves applicants with less room for mistakes, making preparation all the more important.
The best way to prepare is to use the official USCIS study tools, which include flashcards, online practice tests, and audio versions of the questions. Starting early gives applicants the confidence to walk into the interview ready. Even though the format is stricter, the resources to succeed are available.
If you or someone you know is planning to apply for naturalization, now is the time to get familiar with the new format and updated study materials before it officially takes effect. https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship-resource-center/naturalization-test-and-study-resources/2025-civics-test
